Beginning Sewing and Creative Design

Kimono and matching Tote Bag 

It is no news that the fashion industry creates a significant amount of waste. Even before clothes are sold, 15% of the fabric used to make them ends up in the landfill as fabric scraps.

  1. In this class, you will learn creative pattern and garment making techniques to make a simple Tote Bag and kimono robe. That can be worn as a Top, Bathing suit or Night Gown; by just changing the length of garment. 
You will be able to go home wearing this!  A $40 dollar materials fee is payable to the instructor at the first class meeting. All experience levels are welcome.

What we will learn:

  • scrap reuse
  • up-cycling
  • mending techniques
  • how to make a Kimono and a Tote bag from beginning to end, 
  • hand/ machine sewing based on your choice/ availability

Included materials:

   buttons and other trims

  • Fabrics 
  • Buttons and other trims
  • Thread and Hand Sewing needles
  • measuring rulers/tape
  • chalk
  • pins

What to bring:

  • scissors
  • notebook for note taking
  • sewing machine (with needles and thread) – not required/optional but encouraged.  
  • any garments/ bed sheets you would like to mend/ repurpose/ transform
  • any special fabrics you may want to use
  • extra measuring tapes and chalk if you have
  • extension cord for sewing machine

Meaza Haile

Meaza Haile lived in metropolitan Washington D.C, for fourteen years before moving to the San Francisco Bay area where she continued her employment with Nordstrom.

She received recognition as a top seller and “All Star” during her Nordstrom employment, along with furthering her education and completing a course in Fashion Design and Marketing at Alameda College in 2017.

Beginning with working in her home living room, with a talented fellow student – they opened a small fashion design business that they called 8AM Fashion, eventually renting a small room in Berkeley for the business, building their clientelle and moving to a larger space in the Grand Lake area of Oakland.

Besides supplying design and tailoring services to the local Oakland community, they also offer internships in partnership with the Peralta Community College – College of Alameda – Apparel Design and Merchandising Program to also Oakland Community residents that helps foster the next generation of designers and fashion professionals. The focus of their designs is to elevate cultural heritage using unique prints, promoting sustainable practice and well made garments for customers.
