Beginning Woodcarving ~ with Sheri Tharp

Experience the satisfaction of shaping wood while learning basic wood properties, tool use, and basic carving techniques. Students start by carving a low relief design “grapes and leaves” project that teaches the foundation skills that students need to carve more complex designs. After the completion of the basic project, students may choose from either a second relief carving using a design of their own or a 3 dimensional sculptural piece that is stack laminated. The second carving could be a mask, a figure-animal or human, picture frame, carved sign, or something utilitarian such as a spoon or a wooden plate.

Let your imagination run wild!

There will be carving tools to use but you are welcome to bring tools that you already have.

The materials fee includes wood for the beginning project and material for the second project. There will be extra wood available for purchase if you have a larger piece you would like to carve.

Material fee – $40
